Placements and Internships

Placements are an invaluable way of getting to know a company. And, of course, for a company to get to know you. Here at John Lewis, we run summer internships and year-long industrial placements, exclusively in retail management.

Both will give you a unique overview of how a John Lewis shop is structured and operates, not to mention a flavour of the exciting future career you could have with us.

Retail Management Industrial Placements

We know how important it can be to choose the right company for your year in industry. After all, it could end up being the place where you play out your future career. So what does John Lewis have to offer?

Joining one of our dynamic department stores, you'll gain experiences and skills that could form the basis of a bright career in retail management. Exposure to different functions throughout the branch will give you a rare overarching view of our expert trading and retail management processes.

Show us what you can do and you'll take on plenty of responsibility, fast. You'll even be managing your own section of a department within the first six months.

  • Be prepared to work some weekends and evenings on a regular basis
  • You'll need to complete an online application. If successful, you'll be invited to an assessment centre

Application criteria

  • This will be your year in industry as part of your university degree course
  • You must be prepared to work some weekends and evenings on a regular basis
  • We regret that if you don't meet the above minimum criteria, we won't be able to consider your application

The application process for Summer Interns and Industrial Placements are broadly similar to the graduate process. Please refer to the Search and Apply section of our website for more information.

Retail Management Summer Internships

It's a jam-packed six weeks in one of our department stores. You'll meet senior branch managers and pick up a host of new business skills, from general retail management and stock control to product presentations and selling techniques. What's more, you'll complete a project on a commercial aspect of the business.

Shine and you could go straight to the assessment centre stage for the next intake of our Graduate Retail Management scheme.

Who we look for

An ambitious university student from any degree discipline, you'll be passionate about retail and customer service – probably thanks to your previous retail experience.

Strong communication skills both on paper and in person are also really important, as you'll be working alongside senior managers, colleagues and customers, as well as giving a presentation on your project.

Things to bear in mind

  • The scheme is six weeks long
  • If you're offered a place, we'll ask you to tell us the three shops you'd like to join in preference order. We'll do our best to place you in one of your preferred locations
  • Be prepared to work some weekends and evenings
  • You'll need to complete an online application. If successful, you'll be invited to an assessment centre
  • You'll have a performance review at the end of your internship to see if you can be recommended to move straight to the assessment centre stage of the next intake for the Retail Management Graduate scheme
  • You can choose any point in the summer holidays to complete your six-week placement
  • You'll be paid approximately £310 per week

Application criteria

GCSE Maths and English or equivalent at grade C or above.

Please note, you will be required to provide evidence of your qualifications.

You must be studying for a full university degree (equivalent to, or higher than, BA or BSc). However, this can be completed in any year of study, as long as you will be returning to university after the summer.

Please note that we do not offer Head Office placements in John Lewis, for example in Buying, Marketing, Merchandising, Personnel or Design. If you impress us on this industrial placement, you could be offered a place on the next intake of our Graduate Retail Management scheme.
